A Solstice Fable

  • Dec. 22nd, 2009 at 12:16 PM
And Lord Frith was travelling over the Earth, and going to and fro upon it, when He did chance to espy Elilhrair-rah frolicking in the winter remains of Mr. McGillicuddy's Garden.
"Elilhrair-rah!" Did speak Lord Frith. "Do you not know that this is indeed Mr. McGillicuddy's Garden?"
"Yup." Answered Elilhrair-rah, for he was always full of insolence and spice. "It's winter, innit?"
"Truly, it is indeed Winter, Elilhrair-rah." Answered Lord Frith, still waiting for a complete answer from Elilhrair-rah.
"Well, there's snow, right?"
"Indeed, Elilhrair-rah. And how does that change matters?"
"Brother Dog is slow and heavy. He goes through the snow, I go over it." Elilhrair-rah shook first one of his great hind feet, then the other.
"Ah, but Sister Dog is a bit lighter and faster, and truly she can turn upon a ha'penny." Lord Frith warned Elilhrair-rah, for He felt He ought to be fair, even if Elilhrair-rah was a punk who was getting too big for his britches. "And she is unreasonably smart, besides."
"Pfft. Nobody's as fast as me, not if there's corners." And Elilhrair-rah didst turn his back upon Lord Frith, and go about his foolish way.

And truly, Sister Dog could turn upon a ha'penny, and indeed had the brain of a tactical computer, and didst catch and bring down Elilhrair-rah, who was therefore not able to rejoice with his wives and his children upon the return of Lord Frith to the skies.

Yesterday...

  • Dec. 18th, 2009 at 9:07 AM
Yesterday was special. Check my morning funnies (not so many, it WAS Thursday, after all) do some cleaning, then stroll out to the car to go get my nephew.
Hollow scraping sound, kinda like a fenderberg. Huh. Stop at the bottom of the driveway to check. Nope, can't see anything. Start moving again. "pff."
Okay, that is now a flat tire. Rats. Call SiL, to arrange for alternative pickup of Nephew while I change the dang tire.
Oh, great, my phone is getting charged. Run to house.
Okay, transport established.
Oh, swell, we've got one of those silly-a$$ spares. Bugger. Okay, get the old tire off, maybe I can see what the guilty party is. Bugger. Change positions. Okay, now it's coming off.

Son-of-an-ancestor.

Taurus' have coil-spring springs, not leaf-springs, at least in the front.
Now, when leaf-springs go, eh, your ride gets rough. When a coil-spring goes, a lethal dagger is produced, poised to cause horrible damage to your tire.

Seriously.

Luckily, this happened in my driveway, not tooling down the freeway at 10:00 at night. Which is where I had previously been using my car. Or tooling down the highway at noon. With my nephew. Like I would have been half-an-hour later.

Bless you, Guardian Angel.

Yeah, they can't just swap the spring out on my particular car. Oh, no. It's a major operation. And the other one was likely to go, too.
Luckily (hah) they sell them only in pairs.
So. My car basically has a totally new front suspension now.

Cars. Sheesh.

No alcohol at Twelfth Night

  • Dec. 17th, 2009 at 10:30 AM
I just wanted to let everyone know that because our site is a school they have a zero tolerance alcohol policy. It is on the event web page that the site will be bone dry, no alcohol allowed on premises, this includes all sealed alcohol intended for gift giving. No exceptions!!!

But I wanted to cover all my bases because I would really feel bad if we lost our ability to use this site because of the booze.

Thank you everyone!!!

Friendly Warning.

Re: Holiday (snort!) Music.
In particular, Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Yeah... That one awesome song you heard? They've got two, maybe three others. Okay, possibly four, but who's counting?
This is holiday music by people who hate the holidays. Grim? Generally. Depressing? Often. Festive?
Bueller? Bueller?
I really need to vet this stuff first. The latest one has a decent 'Hall of the Mountain King" tribute, and a funky Toccata tribute. And... A placid 'O Fortuna'.
Placid. Oh, and it seems to be a commentary on the Vietnam War.
Schiesse.

I really need to vet this stuff first.

25 days until Twelfth Night

I hope you're all as excited for this event as I am!!!

That time of the Season

  • Dec. 14th, 2009 at 10:06 PM
One feels one ought to post...
It's seasonably cold, for the first time in years. We've had some snow. (Shut UP, Cutter...)
We've got the biggest driveway on the block.
For those who haven't been over, we can park six cars with a lane down the middle so first timers can get out. Apparently 2 owners back moved houses, and he parked his flat-bed in the driveway. It goes on, and on, and on...

The skies are clear, so all the world's heat is leaving.

I cleaned the Lair yesterday; there's actually floor! Who knew? This also got a couple of projects finished. BTW: Ozzy is actually pretty good sewing music. Go figure.

Anybody recommend a particular mid-range semi-portable* sewing machine? The low-end critter I got at Sears this past summer doth disappoint. (Unreliable stitch tension, for the most part.)
I don't need serging, I don't need digital embroidery. I want a solid machine that will stitch straight, zig-zag, adjust left, center AND right, and do Long & Short stitches. My old Singer Sonata worked great until the bobbin tray busted, but unfortunately repairs would be $75-100, and it was a 20 yr old machine. That was only the FIRST thing to go.**

*One that doesn't need a fixed stand, but that will plug in. Sometimes I like to be able to work (sew) at the dinner table.
** Unlike my Emdeko*** table model, that I think was made out of repurposed tank parts. I LOVE my Emdeko. The stitches may be a little erratic if I'm not careful, but it doesn't stop.
*** A Japanese Singer knock-off from 1953. Apparently Audie Murphy helped set up the company.
